String Bands (1926-1929) $12.78 String Bands (1926-1929) has a few remarkable tracks: the hilarious, warbling vocals on the Kansas City Blues Strummers’ “Broken Bed Blues” and a very rare cello solo on the Old Pal Smoke Shop Four’s “Black Cat Blues” will single-handedly justify the purchase for some enthusiasts. The album is most recommended, however, for the light it sheds on the intersecting traditions of black-and-white rural musical styles in the early age of recording. Andrew and Jim Baxter, a fiddle-guitar duo from Georgia, demonstrate equal virtuosity at blues and country dance styles and are, deservedly, the best-known performers on the disc; Nap Hayes and Matthew Prater fuse Scott Joplin’s ragtime with more traditional, country styles on their mandolin-guitar duets. Most interestingly, the compilation includes two racially integrated groups, a phenomenon otherwise absent in the 1920s recording industry: fiddler Andrew Baxter joins the otherwise all-white Georgia Yellowhammers on “G Blues,” and Jim Booker, another black fiddler, joins Taylor’s Kentucky Boys for four standard dance pieces, including “Soldier’s Joy” and “Grey Eagle.” The four tracks by the Alabama Sheiks which conclude the album — recorded, despite the title of this collection, in 1931 — are fair duets by another guitar-fiddle duo obviously influenced by the great Mississippi Sheiks, whose “Sittin’ on Top of the World” they imitate reasonably well. Although not highly recommended for casual listeners, this collection will be of great interest to many and provides a welcomed expansion of modern understandings of string band music. ~ Burgin Mathews, Rovi Performers: Nap Hayes – Gitcho, Guitar; Andrew Baxter – Speech/Speaker/Speaking Part, Violin; Bud Landress – Speech/Speaker/Speaking Part; Aulton Ray – Accordion, Vocals; Jim Booker – Kazoo, Guitar, Violin; John Chapman – Vocals; Robert Steele – Kazoo, Violin, Guitar; Willie Young – Guitar |

Country Music Pioneers on Edison $12.78 Thomas Edison’s pioneering Edison Company recorded a tremendous amount of material between 1914 and 1929, including a host of vaudeville sketches, opera, and classical pieces, string bands, jazz dance bands, political speeches, and even the voice of Mr. Edison himself. The company ceased making records in 1929, partially because of the rise of radio, which had made its commercial debut three years earlier. Not fully realizing that the public would pay for the privilege of hearing the music they wanted to hear at a time and place that was convenient for them (a premise that now drives the modern recording industry), Edison packed up its vast and varied catalog in boxes and stored it in an old warehouse until 1976, when Merritt Malvern began the process of transferring everything to archival tape. Most of this material has never been issued in any form, and Document Records has undertaken the daunting task of issuing it all on digital disc, beginning with this first installment, Country Music Pioneers on Edison. Most of what is here — a mix of banjo and fiddle instrumentals and reworkings of popular songs and gospel hymns — probably has more historical value than actual musical value, although a few of the tracks are quite striking, including the remarkable banjoist Fred Van Eps’ “Medley of Southern Melodies” and Gene Austin’s “The Railroad Blues,” which also features pianist Charles Bates and George Reneau, who does an amazing job of mimicking a train pulling out of a station on his harmonica. The most eye-opening cut is the final one, “Nonsense,” fiddler Carson Robison’s bizarre piece of surreal Western swing from 1929, which clangs, clacks, reels, and wheezes like a 21st century experimental jazz composition full of fiddles and clarinets, proving that the public’s perception of music may change, but musicians will always try to stretch the boundaries, no matter what the era. The entire history of recorded music falls inside the last 100 years, and this intriguing collection reminds us that — at some level, at least — all of it remains contemporary, and the distance between Robison’s “Nonsense” and the latest Kanye West production is not so vast as one might imagine. ~ Steve Leggett, Rovi |

Country Music for Keith Girdler $19.98 How can we conceptualize a tribute to one of the most influential personalities in our musical life? Well, to keep it simple this tribute is a pure labour of love and respect but also a worthwhile charity effort. ”Country Music. Songs for Keith Girdler” is a polished compilation that was put together by Keith’s close friend, Richard Preece (Lovejoy) to raise money for the Martletts Hospice in Hove, the institution that looked after Keith so generously and devotedly. Siesta Records is very proud to release this compilation for this worthy cause. All proceeds from the sale of this cd will go directly to helping raise funds for the Martlet’s Hospice Hove (East Sussex) ( www.themartlets.org.uk). The contributing artists have all donated their talents for the merited cause. The record is not a mere document or chronicle, all songs are original in every sense, exclusive or unreleased and recorded or provided specifically for this project. We trust you will thoroughly enjoy this diverse group of talented and iconic people and contribute to charity. There are recovered treasures from the legendary Creation acts The Times and Biff Bang Pow! but also breathtaking performances of solid bands connected to the reference labels: Sarah, Siesta, Matinee, Marsh-Marigold, Vinyl Japan, Sub-pop and Elefant (The Orchids, Club 8, Louis Philippe, The Would-be-goods, The Wake, St Christopher, Hal, Trembling Blue Stars, Aberdeen, Lovejoy.), and emotional forays of highly respected names such as The Clientele, Pete Fijalkowski or Love Dance. This 16-tracks record is an absolute must-have companion piece for all the fans of the catchy, witty, heartfelt pop songs that the indie scene has burgeoned over the last few decades (from C86 to the visions of labels such as Sarah, Subway, El or Labrador). There are numerous examples of fine songwriting, subtle sophistication and plenty of rich and interesting sounds within an inventive framework that evokes the spirit of Keith (do not miss the phenomenal and respectful cover versions of Blueboy’s songs by Louis Philippe, Love Dance and Lovejoy), his affinities and taste (he loved all these sounds). Everything is goosebump-raising. Think of this as an interesting companion to all his vast and vital body of work. A beloved and revered member of the indie pop community as the vocalist of Blueboy, Arabesque and Beaumont, Keith passed away on May 15, 2007 after a long battle with cancer. In addition to playing music, Keith also served as a social worker and as the Volunteer Services Manager at the Age Concern care facility in Eastbourne, England. Words cannot really come close to describing the feelings that we have about the sad loss of Keith Girdler one year ago. Both his music and personality made a lasting impression on us and we want the flame to keep burning through the release of this record. Keith wanted to be remembered with ‘happiness and smiles’ |
