Country Music Artists Males

country music artists males
Country Music query a male possibly recent?

I’ve heard a country music track on the radio which goes(something like this) in the chorus
“And I didn’t know the way things would turn out(way they did back then)………………….”

Its a beautiful song and “appears” to be sung by Garth Brooks(my best guess-it sounded something like him) or George Strait but its got a lovely piano at the end and the songs highly evocative with a tune sounding something like the 91 hit “Midnight In Montgomery” towards the latter part.

Its a love song song sung by a country artist possibly trying to make it up and being apologetic towards what he could’ve done to make it better

Males may open with the bubbling water of “Bong Life,” but ironically enough, it dispatches the stoned haze of the Intelligence’s previous album Fake Surfers with a few well-placed power chords. Lars Finberg and company keep finding new ways of being inscrutable and unpredictable, and at first it seems like they’ll do it on Males by being remarkably straightforward, a sharp about-face from not just Fake Surfers but the band’s other 2009 album, the considerably messier Crepuscule with Pacman. The album’s first half chugs along with songs like “Tuned to Puke” and “Sailor Itch,” both of which show that no matter how oddball the Intelligence gets, their garage-punk foundations are solid. However, even on these songs the guitars and keyboards veer off on tangents, keeping the band firmly on the strange side. “White Corvette” and “Like Like Like Like Like Like Like” — which sounds like Devo playing a song written by a valley girl — offer plenty of new wave thrills, underscoring that the weirder Finberg is, the better. Things get downright surreal on “Mom or a Parking Lot,” which dips into jazz so hallucinatory you can practically see the pink elephants dancing around; with lyrics like “my beard has become the lawn,” it’s one of the strangest things the Intelligence has laid down since Deuteronomy’s “Block of Ice.” “The Beetles” adorns its acoustic strumming with a solo so wobbly it sounds like the guitar is melting, Dali-style. Finberg’s storytelling is the music’s equal, especially on “Estate Sales,” a clear-eyed and cranky meditation on solitude, consumption and death, and “Chateau Bandit,” in which he and the rest of the band kidnap a house and hold it for ransom. Yet the strangest thing about Males may be that Finberg recorded the album with his touring band (which includes members of like minded groups such as Eat Skull), but it’s one of the cleanest-sounding things the Intelligence has ever done. It doesn’t quite reach Deuteronomy’s brilliance, but it’s still a treat to figure out what the band is going to do next on Males. ~ Heather Phares, Rovi

Country music–with its candid lyrics about everyday fears, frustrations, desires, and dilemmas–has arguably become the most popular style of music in the world: In 1998 superstar Garth Brooks was the biggest-selling solo performer in the history of music, second only in artist status to the Beatles. "Country Music" chronicles the rich history of the genre, from its early days in the 1920s to the multimillion-dollar industry of the present. Covering the music by decade from its birth in 1922 (when it first became a commercial category) to 1950, and by year from 1950 to 1997, this book includes facts about hundreds of country legends, as well as crossover artists like Elvis Presley, Linda Ronstadt, John Denver, and K.D. Lang. It also features: essays on the significant developments of each year; the most important records; debut artists; lists of honors (Grammys, Gold and Platinum sales, Country Music Association Awards, and Academy of Country Music Awards); milestones of noteworthy events; sidebars with artist biographies and interesting anecdotes; and over 200 rare photos, album covers, and sheet music. Now updated through 1997, this comprehensive reference presents invaluable information about a truly American phenomenon.

American country music is a blend of musical traditions, from the balladry and dance tunes of the British Isles to African-American blues and gospel, to minstrel show and Tin Pan Alley commercial tunes, to the music of immigrant Acadian, German, and Hispanic groups, to the ballads of the coal miners and cowboys. Commercial recordings such as the landmark Little Old Log Cabin in the Lane recorded by Fiddlin John Carson and the WLS National Barn Dance and WSMs Grand Ole Opry helped bring the music of Appalachia, the South, and the West to the attention of the rest of the country. The 1930s and 1940s saw new artists develop new styles, including western swing and honky tonk. Despite several dry spells in country music history, mostly during the 1950s, real country music never died and made a comeback in the 1970s. American Popular Music: Country documents the evolution of this genre as it carved a place for itself in the music industry, one song at a time.

Although you’d never know it by listening to the radio or watching MTV, the early 21st century — perhaps more than any other time in the history of rock — has seen quite a few bands that have little regard for sticking to a single genre. A prime example is the New York City/New Jersey quintet So I Had to Shoot Him, which has created a style the bandmembers refer to as “sex metal,” in which singer Libby’s “Debbie Harry meets death metal” vocals do battle with the noisecore-ish technicality of the instrumentalists in the band. The quintet’s 2005 release, Alpha Males and Popular Girls, accomplishes what most noisecore sets out to do: it creates an instant headache for the uninitiated, with an overabundance of what are often referred to as “blast beats” and discordant guitar chords. But then again, bands like So I Had to Shoot Him should be commended for not sticking to conventionality (especially in this day and age, when so much music is by the numbers), as evidenced by such selections as “People Hugging and Football,” “Another Roman E’ Clef by Hart Bochner,” and the amusingly titled “King Diamond in the Rough.” One thing’s for certain: So I Had to Shoot Him won’t be confused with No Doubt anytime soon. ~ Greg Prato, Rovi

Classic Country: Legends of Country Music

Classic Country: Legends of Country Music

$4.98

Long before Garth Brooks, Shania Twain, Faith Hill, and The Dixie Chicks, the original pioneers of country music–The Carter Family, Vernon Dalhart, The Monroe Brothers, The Louvin Brothers, and others–paved the way for future country artists, influencing musicians for generations to come. Now for the first time, country music authority Charles K. Wolfe gathers together his profiles of 50 legends of country music. "Classic Country" includes such Hall of Famers as the father of bluegrass Bill Monroe, honky tonker Lefty Frizzell, and queen of country music Kitty Wells, as well as lesser-known but equally important artists like DeFord Bailey, first African-American star of the Grand Ole Opry, the mysterious Seven Foot Dilly, and the reclusive songwriter Arthur Q. Smith. Wolfe also offers portraits of recent artists who perform in the classic country style, such as Doc Watson, The Freight Hoppers, Hazel and Alice, and The Statler Brothers. Based on the author’s personal interviews with the musicians and those who knew them, these profiles present colorful anecdotes and little-known facts behind the songs. Here you will read how Lefty Frizzell’s hit "I Love You, I’ll Prove It a Thousand Ways" started off as a love letter to his wife while he was in jail at age 19. And how Roy Acuff was so popular that during the latter days of World War II, Japanese soldiers would try to psyche out American Marines by yelling taunts like "To hell with Franklin Roosevelt To hell with Babe Ruth To hell with Roy Acuff " Much more than a collection of mini-biographies, this engaging collection also provides unique insights into the history of the recording and broadcast industry that are sure to fascinate not only fans and scholars of country and bluegrass music, but anyone interested in the roots of American popular music.

Coal Country Music

Coal Country Music

$10.38

Coal Country Music is the audio companion to the Coal Country documentary film, which attempts to alert people to the dangers of “mountain top removal” coal mining. A process whereby the top of a mountain is blasted off for coal mining purposes, mountain top removal wreaks environmental havoc; the film and album are part of a grassroots effort to put a stop to it. A wide array of country and folk artists have answered the call to be part of this benefit album, and all the proceeds go to the cause. You get legends like Tom T. Hall, Willie Nelson, and John Prine, up-and-comers like Justin Townes Earle, and a sprinkling of little-known singers like Celeste Krenz and Schuyler Fisk. Some of the songs chosen are specific to the subject, like Hall’s “I’m a Coal Mining Man,” Krenz’s “Big Coal River,” and even John Prine’s classic “Paradise.” Others, like Willie Nelson’s poignant, solo acoustic version of Bob Dylan’s “Blowin’ in the Wind,” are more about the feeling, a general statement on injustices being perpetrated. Most importantly in the case of the album itself, though, the whole thing manages to hang together musically, as the folk, country, and bluegrass sounds of the contributors all feel connected. It’s partly because of the subject matter, of course, but also because the disc seems to have been carefully curated and arranged to make sonic sense in addition to making a political point. If you want to get brought up to date on the issue at hand, you’d probably be better served by seeing the film, but even if you’re just after an affecting American experience, Coal Country Music stands up well. ~ J. Allen, Rovi

Discovering Country Music

Discovering Country Music

$39.95

Discovering Country Music chronicles the incredible evolution of country music in America – from the fiddle to the pop charts – and provides an insightful account of the reasons and motives that have determined its various transformations and offshoots over the years. In order to understand what country music is, and why, it is essential to understand how it makes its money Ñ the basic revenue streams, the major companies involved, and how country artists are booked and marketed. Author Don Cusic helps readers do that, and goes even further, covering not only the business and the technology that have shaped the industry, but also tackling the question of country's relationship to the other major genres of the American recording industry, including pop, blues, and rock music. Discovering Country Music is broken down into ten sections which include: key musical trends; ancillary business trends such as recording technology, radio, and the recording industry; and prominent artists, including as a small sample Stephen Foster, The Carter Family, Elvis, Johnny Cash, Dolly Parton, Willie Nelson, Garth Brooks, The Dixie Chicks, Tim McGraw, Faith Hill, and Kenny Chesney. This work should appeal to fans, scholars, educators, libraries and the general reader alike.

Country Music for Keith Girdler

Country Music for Keith Girdler

$19.98

How can we conceptualize a tribute to one of the most influential personalities in our musical life? Well, to keep it simple this tribute is a pure labour of love and respect but also a worthwhile charity effort. ”Country Music. Songs for Keith Girdler” is a polished compilation that was put together by Keith’s close friend, Richard Preece (Lovejoy) to raise money for the Martletts Hospice in Hove, the institution that looked after Keith so generously and devotedly. Siesta Records is very proud to release this compilation for this worthy cause. All proceeds from the sale of this cd will go directly to helping raise funds for the Martlet’s Hospice Hove (East Sussex) ( www.themartlets.org.uk). The contributing artists have all donated their talents for the merited cause. The record is not a mere document or chronicle, all songs are original in every sense, exclusive or unreleased and recorded or provided specifically for this project. We trust you will thoroughly enjoy this diverse group of talented and iconic people and contribute to charity. There are recovered treasures from the legendary Creation acts The Times and Biff Bang Pow! but also breathtaking performances of solid bands connected to the reference labels: Sarah, Siesta, Matinee, Marsh-Marigold, Vinyl Japan, Sub-pop and Elefant (The Orchids, Club 8, Louis Philippe, The Would-be-goods, The Wake, St Christopher, Hal, Trembling Blue Stars, Aberdeen, Lovejoy.), and emotional forays of highly respected names such as The Clientele, Pete Fijalkowski or Love Dance. This 16-tracks record is an absolute must-have companion piece for all the fans of the catchy, witty, heartfelt pop songs that the indie scene has burgeoned over the last few decades (from C86 to the visions of labels such as Sarah, Subway, El or Labrador). There are numerous examples of fine songwriting, subtle sophistication and plenty of rich and interesting sounds within an inventive framework that evokes the spirit of Keith (do not miss the phenomenal and respectful cover versions of Blueboy’s songs by Louis Philippe, Love Dance and Lovejoy), his affinities and taste (he loved all these sounds). Everything is goosebump-raising. Think of this as an interesting companion to all his vast and vital body of work. A beloved and revered member of the indie pop community as the vocalist of Blueboy, Arabesque and Beaumont, Keith passed away on May 15, 2007 after a long battle with cancer. In addition to playing music, Keith also served as a social worker and as the Volunteer Services Manager at the Age Concern care facility in Eastbourne, England. Words cannot really come close to describing the feelings that we have about the sad loss of Keith Girdler one year ago. Both his music and personality made a lasting impression on us and we want the flame to keep burning through the release of this record. Keith wanted to be remembered with ‘happiness and smiles’

Queen of Country Music [Box Set]

Queen of Country Music [Box Set]

$89.98

Bear Family, the venerable German label that does reissue boxes of U.S. artists better than any American label — with the possible exception of Mosaic — has taken the cream of Kitty Wells’ career and issued one of the most historically important collections in the history of country music. The Queen of Country Music is a four-CD box, with exhaustive biographical and session notes by Charles Wolfe that document, in their entirety, nine years of Ms. Wells career, from its inception through to its turning point and superstardom, the years 1949 to 1958; there are 114 tracks in all. Along with every major hit and B-side from the eras, the set includes classic original versions of “It Wasn’t God Who Made Honky Tonk Angels,” “Hey Joe!,” “I Hear the Jukebox Playing,” “Lonely Side of Town,” “Making Believe,” “Dust on the Bible,” “The Place That Kills,” “Right or Wrong,” “Just When I Needed You,” “The Great Speckled Bird,” “Jealousy,” and many others. There are plenty of alternate takes, unissued tracks and, as the session notes attest., Ms. Wells was the beginning point for many, including the legendary producer Owen Bradley, who worked with her and Patsy Cline simultaneously. Box sets such as this one, while geared to the collector and fanatic have, it would seem, limited appeal, but The Queen of Country Music can be looked at in a different light entirely. The story of Ms. Wells ascent to stardom also accurately reflects the changing tides in Nashville and the changing popular attitudes toward country music. Like Don Gibson, Ms. Wells, while remaining firmly a country, roots, and honky tonk vocalist, nonetheless, because of Bradley’s production techniques and marketing changes ushered in by Chet Atkins at RCA, experienced a certain amount of crossover success due to massive jukebox play in barrooms and lounges all over the North, As in the Gibson set, this one offers a real view of Nashville’s evolution into its real glory years from 1955-1970. ~ Thom Jurek, Rovi Performers: Benny Martin – Fiddle; Clyde Baum – Mandolin; Emory Martin – Banjo; Harold Morrison – Banjo, Guitar (Steel); Ray Crisp – Baritone (Vocal), Fiddle, Vocals; Thomas Lee Jackson Jr. – Vocal Harmony, Fiddle, Tenor (Vocal), Harmony Vocals; Alex Garland – Guitar; Bob Moore – Bass; Bud Isa
