Country Music $14.38 Naturally, the not-so-unspoken joke behind the title of Willie Nelson’s 2010 album is that it’s been so long since he’s played straight country music, he needs to clearly label it when he does. Of course, that’s not strictly true: just as recently as 2009 he was ripping it up with Asleep at the Wheel, turning out a straight-ahead western swing record that is every bit as country as Country Music, although it is true that he’s never quite cut a collection of country music as hushed and muted as this. The soft-plucked string bass and strummed acoustic guitars are trademarks of T-Bone Burnett, the roots music producer whose well-tailored analog impressionism fetishizes authenticity, prizing every piece of pristinely preserved vintage equipment and then recording them immaculately, often with appealing results. Marathon $30.39 Marathon marked the addition of keyboard player Alan Pasqua and singer Greg Walker’s replacement by singer/guitarist Alex Ligertwood in the Santana lineup. Otherwise, the album was notable for consisting entirely of band-written material, although those songs were in the established R&B/rock style evolved on albums like Amigos, Festival, and Inner Secrets. The formula seemed to be wearing thin by now, however, as, even with a Top 40 hit in “You Know That I Love You” (number 35), Marathon became the first Santana album to fall below the 500,000-sales mark necessary for gold record certification. Yeah, it says 2010, but it came out before the year turned, and some of these songs were still in regular radio and television rotation when that new year did arrive. In one incredible year, Don Fardon outsold Elton John, Jimi Hendrix, Elvis Presley, Cliff Richard, the Bee Gees and Status Quo in the singles chart. ‘Indian Reservation’ was a worldwide smash in 1971, going on to sell more than three million copies. Whilst preparing for recording Country To Country, Fardon received a call from the Coca Cola Corporation, asking for permission to use an old b-side, “I’m Alive” for a new advertising campaign for their drinks brand “5 Alive”.
