This one divides up easily into three categories, with disc each dedicated to “the singer,” “the songwriter,” and the collaborator”– let’s face it, there is very little that Nelson hasn’t done or accomplished during his 50 years in the music business up to this point. Disc one is “the singer” chapter, and includes his charting singles in both the country and pop categories. It includes music from his RCA period — such as “Sweet Memories” from 1968 through to his final charting single with Columbia in 1986, “Living in the Promiseland.” Disc two centers on the “songwriter, and includes tunes he wrote and recorded, including classics such as “On the Road Again,” “Yesterday’s Wine,” and “Angel Flying Too Close to the Ground.” Finally, there is the “collaborator” disc. In some ways, this CD is the most fun to listen to, as it includes duets with Roger Miller, Merle Haggard, Ray Charles, Leon Russell, his performances with the Highwaymen, Faron Young, Hank Snow, Dolly Parton, George Jones, and more. To Willie $11.98 Saying Phosphorescent’s tribute album to Willie Nelson is redolent of history is an understatement — besides the subject of the album itself, the title acts as a specific reference to Nelson’s own 1975 tribute to Lefty Frizzell, To Lefty from Willie. There’s a danger of well-meaning overkill and clinging associations at work as a result, which the album has to struggle through. Still, it’s also an interesting sign of just how much certain goal posts in the world of indie rock have changed over time — the fascination with older, more “real” country has been present since the days of X and the Blasters, to name two bands out of many, and Nelson’s own well-established outsider/outlaw image is a perfect one to hang one’s hat on. Mathew Houck aka Phosphorescent and a crew of backing musicians aim to do just that on To Willie and if by default it can’t fully capture the killer resonance of Nelson’s immediately recognizable vocals and twang, Houck’s singing is far more hushed in comparison, though to his credit he doesn’t specifically aim to sound like Nelson in terms of out-and-out mimicry — the whole is still a game enough effort, if nothing else showing Houck’s excellent taste in song choices. (A collection of the Nelson performances of each track would make one heck of a mix disc.) Kicking off with a double-tip of the hat — “Reasons to Quit,” written by Merle Haggard rather than by Nelson but a standard for both men — To Willie generally maintains a steady, softly woozy late-night singalong feeling throughout its length, with some performances giving Houck and his band a real chance to shine instrumentally. “Walkin’” features the most musicians on a track — seven total, with some lovely pedal steel work by Ricky Ray Jackson — while Hank Cochran’s “Can I Sleep in Your Arms” is a full one-man-band effort. The Very Best of Willie Nelson $14.37 Spanning two discs and 30 songs, The Very Best of Willie Nelson isn’t as sublime as Greatest Hits (& Some That Will Be), which came close to capturing the essence of Willie Nelson’s Columbia recordings in 20 tracks. The Very Best covers more ground and, technically, it has more charting hits, but it isn’t as far-reaching and diverse as Greatest Hits, which gave equal ground to country, western swing, folk, and pop. This collection tends toward obvious choices, emphasizing covers of pop songs instead of his more obscure choices or original material. Originally issued in 1966 and 1972, respectively, each of the 24 tracks has a continuity dominated by the era’s country-pop as Willie had not yet earnestly embraced his outlaw persona. The live album, recorded July 5 in Fort Worth includes “Night Life,” “I Never Cared for You,” and “Medley: Mr. Record Man/Hello Walls/One Day at a Time.” The Willie Way was Nelson’s last album on RCA before moving on to Atlantic.
