country music underground artists
How do I get my BF to enjoy my type of music? In the car, at home, at an event?

My bf and I have been together for 4 years and it drives me crazy that he always has to control the radio in my car. He constantly listens to britney, christina, lady gaga, beyonce, danity kane, anything pop, etc..Don’t get me wrong I enjoy this type of music to, but not to the point where it drains me having to hear it on repeat repeat repeat. I mainly enjoy everything but may favs are
indie music (band of horses, vampire weekend, etc),
punk (the distillers, alkaline trio, avenged sevenfold),
country (not sure of the artist but i enjoy it all),
and underground rap.( sage francis, aseop rock, etc.)
He can’t stand to listen to my music because he thinks it stupid. When I change the cd in my car it just ends up being changed after 4-5 min of play. How can I get him to like my music or be considerate?
I do assert myself and I ask him to comprise with me. He has tried to listen to it but I just want him to enjoy it the way he makes me listen and enjoy his music.

I used to have the same problem with my BF. In the end, we decided to share the music- he could play what he wanted on the way to where we were going, & I could play what I wanted on the way home.
You just have to explain to him that a relationship is a two way street, and he has to be fair by not pushing his music onto you when you are nice enough to let him listen to his music.
If that doesn’t work, have no music whatsoever in the car.

Green Eyed Soul marks a stark departure from Lari’s previous work. As far away from country as it is close to, literally, soul, Lari, like her contemporary Shelby Lynne, doesn’t shy away from digging beneath the placid surface into the dark underbelly of life within the insular communities of the deep South. Drawing heavily on her formative influences, Lari wrote and produced the album herself; sh…

Bayou Underground

Bayou Underground

$9.49

The Bayou is a world of its own — a marshy sometimes treacherous oft-times sinister land of creeping darkness and living shadows secret legends and vivid mythology. It is that darkness and those shadows that permeate Bayou Underground the first study of the Louisiana music scene ever to leave behind the bright lights of big city New Orleans and plunge instead into the wilderness that not only surrounds the Big Easy but which stretches for hundreds of miles on either side from Houston Texas to Mobile Alabama. Bayou Underground explores the music of the region from the House of the Rising Sun to gator hunting with Amos Moses (the one-armed Cajun backwoodsman created by country songwriter Jerry Reed) to artists like Bo Diddley Nick Cave Bob Dylan and Creedence Clearwater Revival who were influenced by unsung heroes of the Bayou. In Bayou Underground the people and the cultures that have called the bayou home are unearthed through their words and lives but most of all through the music that has over the last century either arisen from the swamplands themselves or been drawn from fellow visitors to the region as they seek to set down for posterity the emotions dreams and enchantments that the area instilled in them. Part social history part epic travelogue and partly a lament for a way of life that has now all but disappeared Bayou Underground is the gripping story of American music’s forgotten childhood and the parentage it barely even knows about. By comparison the Big Easy had it easy.

Blistering, brilliant, corrosively sharp and blackly comic – the new novel from the Miles Franklin Award winner, Andrew McGahan, now in paperback. Underground is the novel that at least half the country has been waiting for. Think ahead five or so years from now, to an Australia transformed by the never-ending war on terror. Canberra has been wiped out in a nuclear attack. There is a permanent state of emergency. Security checkpoints, citizenship tests, identity cards and detention without trial have all become the norm. Suspect minorities have been locked away into ghettos. And worse – no one wants to play cricket with us anymore. Enter Leo James – burnt-out property developer and black-sheep twin brother of the all powerful Bernard James, Prime Minister of Australia. In an event all too typical of the times, Leo finds himself abducted by terrorists. But this won't be your average kidnapping. Instead, vast and secret forces are at work here, and Leo and his captors are about to embark on a journey into the underworld of a nation gone mad. Like some bastard child of Dr Strangelove and George Orwell, Underground is both an adrenalin-pumped thriller and a gleefully barbed satire that takes a chainsaw to political neo-correctness and Australia's new ultra-nationalism. Blistering and blackly comic, this book goes straight to the heart of the country's future – and it isn't pretty.

Sound Kapital: Beijing's Music Underground [With CD (Audio)]

Sound Kapital: Beijing’s Music Underground [With CD (Audio)]

$22.97

China exists today in a liminal realm, caught between the socialist idealism of old and a calamitous drive for wealth spurned by recent free-market reforms. This seemingly unbridgeable gap tears at the country’s social fabric while provoking younger generations to greater artistic heights. The unique sound emerging from Beijing’s underground delves deeply into this void, aggressively questioning the moral and social basis of China’s fragile modernity even as it subsists upon it. A formidable new wave of Chinese musicians is taking the city by storm. Revolving around four venues spread across Beijing, a burgeoning group of performers are working outside government-controlled media channels, and in the process, capturing the attention of the international music community. They now constitute a fresh, independent voice in a country renowned for creative conformity and saccharine Cantonese pop. In Sound Kapital, photographer Matthew Niederhauser captures the energy of the personalities and performers at D-22, Yugong Yishan, 2 Kolegas, and MAO Livehouse. These revolutionary Beijing nightclubs remain at the core of the city’s creative explosion by hosting an eclectic mix of punk, experimental, rock, and folk performances. Included with the book are concert posters and illustrations that encapsulate the underground scene in Beijing, as well as a CD sampler of the new music being produced. There is no doubt that these musicians will continue to break ground within Beijing’s nascent artistic landscape, helping to push the boundaries of an already expanding realm of independent thought and musical expression in China.

Up from the Underground: The Culture of Rock Music in Postsocialist Hungary

Up from the Underground: The Culture of Rock Music in Postsocialist Hungary

What happens to a community of oppositional artists when the purpose and meaning of their opposition are undermined by social transformation? Such was the dilemma facing many underground artists in Eastern Europe following the collapse of state socialism. In Up from the Underground, Anna Szemere looks at the rock-music-based underground in Hungary, showing how it anticipated, precipitated, and responded to a period of fundamental change. Szemere’s work focuses on a community of rock musicians that became popular with Hungary’s urban youth culture in the early 1980s–groups with names such as the Committee, Control Group, and the Galloping Coroners. Szemere reveals the activities, discourse, and group life of musicians against the background of shifting institutional contexts. By the mid-1990s the change of regime had altered the cultural dynamics of Hungarian society, leading to a complete realignment of the underground music world. Szemere uses the opportunity presented by these developments to challenge one-dimensional representations of popular culture and transition in the region. She also addresses more general questions about the nature and uses of expressive culture, autonomy, social change, and social reproduction. Up from the Underground is an important addition to the scholarship on the cultural dimension of the most profound societal change in Europe since World War II. It also enriches the increasingly global field of cultural sociology and cultural studies by rethinking its central assumptions and theories in the light of Eastern Europe’s unique historical and social experience.

Classic Country: Legends of Country Music

Classic Country: Legends of Country Music

$7.68

Long before Garth Brooks, Shania Twain, Faith Hill, and The Dixie Chicks, the original pioneers of country music–The Carter Family, Vernon Dalhart, The Monroe Brothers, The Louvin Brothers, and others–paved the way for future country artists, influencing musicians for generations to come. Now for the first time, country music authority Charles K. Wolfe gathers together his profiles of 50 legends of country music. "Classic Country" includes such Hall of Famers as the father of bluegrass Bill Monroe, honky tonker Lefty Frizzell, and queen of country music Kitty Wells, as well as lesser-known but equally important artists like DeFord Bailey, first African-American star of the Grand Ole Opry, the mysterious Seven Foot Dilly, and the reclusive songwriter Arthur Q. Smith. Wolfe also offers portraits of recent artists who perform in the classic country style, such as Doc Watson, The Freight Hoppers, Hazel and Alice, and The Statler Brothers. Based on the author’s personal interviews with the musicians and those who knew them, these profiles present colorful anecdotes and little-known facts behind the songs. Here you will read how Lefty Frizzell’s hit "I Love You, I’ll Prove It a Thousand Ways" started off as a love letter to his wife while he was in jail at age 19. And how Roy Acuff was so popular that during the latter days of World War II, Japanese soldiers would try to psyche out American Marines by yelling taunts like "To hell with Franklin Roosevelt To hell with Babe Ruth To hell with Roy Acuff " Much more than a collection of mini-biographies, this engaging collection also provides unique insights into the history of the recording and broadcast industry that are sure to fascinate not only fans and scholars of country and bluegrass music, but anyone interested in the roots of American popular music.

Discovering Country Music

Discovering Country Music

$45.53

"Discovering Country Music" chronicles the incredible evolution of country music in America – from the fiddle to the pop charts – and provides an insightful account of the reasons and motives that have determined its various transformations and offshoots over the years. In order to understand what country music is, and why, it is essential to understand how it makes its money – the basic revenue streams, the major companies involved, and how country artists are booked and marketed. Author Don Cusic helps readers do that, and goes even further, covering not only the business and the technology that have shaped the industry, but also tackling the question of country’s relationship to the other major genres of the American recording industry, including pop, blues, and rock music. "Discovering Country Music" is broken down into ten sections which include: key musical trends; ancillary business trends such as recording technology, radio, and the recording industry; and prominent artists, including as a small sample Stephen Foster, The Carter Family, Elvis, Johnny Cash, Dolly Parton, Willie Nelson, Garth Brooks, The Dixie Chicks, Tim McGraw, Faith Hill, and Kenny Chesney. This work should appeal to fans, scholars, educators, libraries and the general reader alike.

Country Music Goes to War

Country Music Goes to War

$32.12

"Listening to the Beat of the Bomb" UPK author Charles Wolfe discusses his work and his new book Country Music Goes to War in the NEW YORK TIMES. While Toby Keith suggests that Americans should unite in support of the president, the Dixie Chicks assert their right to criticize the current administration and its military pursuits. Country songs about war are nearly as old as the genre itself, and the first gold record in country music went to the 1942 war song "There’s a Star Spangled Banner Waving Somewhere" by Elton Britt. The essays in Country Music Goes to War demonstrate that country musicians’ engagement with significant political and military issues is not strictly a twenty-first-century phenomenon. The contributors examine the output of country musicians responding to America’s large-scale confrontation in recent history: World War II, the Korean War, Vietnam, the cold war, September 11, and both conflicts in the Persian Gulf. They address the ways in which country songs and artists have energized public discourse, captured hearts, and inspired millions of minds. Charles K. Wolfe, professor of English and folklore at Middle Tennessee State University, is the author of numerous books and articles on music. James E. Akenson, professor of curriculum and instruction at Tennessee Technological University, is the founder of the International Country Music Conference. Together they have edited the collections The Women of Country Music, Country Music Annual 2000, Country Music Annual 2001, and Country Music Annual 2002.
