Countdown to Zero $22.91 Conventional wisdom has it that the prospect of nuclear war subsided with the end of the Cold War and the collapse of the Soviet Union, but filmmaker Lucy Walker illustrates how the nuclear threat has only grown in unexpected ways and moved in new directions in this documentary. There are 23,000 nuclear weapons in the world today, a number of which are unaccounted for (when the USSR split into a handful of separate states, some of their bombs went missing), and as the technology becomes simpler, several major radical terrorist groups and politically unstable nations are trying to obtain nuclear weapons, a prospect that isn’t as unlikely as one would hope. And what would happen if the wrong people got their hands on the bomb — or if some of the “good” people were to detonate one through error or mistaken judgment? In Countdown to Zero, a number of leading politicians and political analysts — including Jimmy Carter, Tony Blair, Valerie Plame Wilson, Mikhail Gorbachev, and Zbigniew Brzezinski — discuss the question of nuclear war in the 21st century and what can be done to eliminate the weapons once and for all. Featuring narration by Gary Oldman and music by Pearl Jam, Countdown to Zero received its world premiere at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi |

Country Music $14.38 Naturally, the not-so-unspoken joke behind the title of Willie Nelson’s 2010 album is that it’s been so long since he’s played straight country music, he needs to clearly label it when he does. Of course, that’s not strictly true: just as recently as 2009 he was ripping it up with Asleep at the Wheel, turning out a straight-ahead western swing record that is every bit as country as Country Music, although it is true that he’s never quite cut a collection of country music as hushed and muted as this. The soft-plucked string bass and strummed acoustic guitars are trademarks of T-Bone Burnett, the roots music producer whose well-tailored analog impressionism fetishizes authenticity, prizing every piece of pristinely preserved vintage equipment and then recording them immaculately, often with appealing results. There’s a nicely weathered assurance to Nelson’s performance — his voice never strains, he throws off licks with a casual virtuosity — and he sounds like an old pro happy to play with whoever is in the studio, happy to sing whatever the producer puts in front of him. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, Rovi Performers: Jim Lauderdale – Vocal Harmony; Dennis Crouch – Bass (Acoustic); Mickey Raphael – Harmonica; Mike Compton – Mandolin; Riley Baugus – Banjo; Ronnie McCoury – Mandolin; Russell Pahl – Pedal Steel; Shad Cobb – Fiddle; Stuart Duncan – Fiddle; Budd |

Country Heat 2010 $23.99 Listening to Country Heat 2010 is a bit like listening to a Top 40 new country station at midwinter in 2009, which, come to think of it, is pretty much the point of this 16-track sampler. Yeah, it says 2010, but it came out before the year turned, and some of these songs were still in regular radio and television rotation when that new year did arrive. Brad Paisley and Keith Urban’s “Start a Band” is here, along with Kenny Chesney’s “Out Last Night,” Alan Jackson’s “Country Boy,” Jason Aldean’s “Big Green Tractor,” and Carrie Underwood’s “I Told You So.” There aren’t really any surprises, but there aren’t any commercial interruptions, either. ~ Steve Leggett, Rovi |

Country To Country $14.39 2010 album from the British singer/songwriter. In one incredible year, Don Fardon outsold Elton John, Jimi Hendrix, Elvis Presley, Cliff Richard, the Bee Gees and Status Quo in the singles chart. ‘Indian Reservation’ was a worldwide smash in 1971, going on to sell more than three million copies. Whilst preparing for recording Country To Country, Fardon received a call from the Coca Cola Corporation, asking for permission to use an old b-side, “I’m Alive” for a new advertising campaign for their drinks brand “5 Alive”. Now, the advert featuring The Dancing Dodo has shot Don back into the limelight and he returns to the music world, going back to his Country roots, with Country To Country. Prestige. |

The Final Countdown $5.58 One of the most glorious launches in history, the title track for the thrice-platinum The Final Countdown is so bombastically brilliant, such glorious garbage, that this nuclear hair assault could only spew from the vacuous ’80s. But the full-tilt follow-up “Rock the Night” rules also: “You know it ain’t easy/Running out of thrills.” “Carrie” comes off a consummate butane ballad. Meanwhile, the rest of the disc packs so much power that Swedish superheroes Europe get away with all the processed pretension. In fact, the lofty ambition of “Danger on the Track,” “Ninja,” and “Cherokee” (each as tasty as its title) combines with heated drive and hot delivery to meld The Final Countdown into a unique portrait of propulsive prog and a worthy addition to any hard rock collection. This is the story; this is the legend told by Teutonic guitars and predictable keyboards ringing pure and hurtling through each and every convention perfectly. The quintet’s big-boy Epic inaugural, The Final Countdown deftly combines the Valhalla victory of Europe’s heroic debut with the American poodle pomposity that devoured the band. You could live without The Final Countdown, but why? ~ Doug Stone, Rovi |

Countdown to Infinity $12.78 You always knows what lies in store for you with each new release by David T. Chastain, and his 2007 solo effort, Countdown to Infinity is the perfect example — guitar pyrotechnics from beginning to end. As a veteran shredder, Chastain’s instrumental prowess has certainly wowed many a fellow metal guitarist over the years (specifically, those who favor precision over feel). And with Countdown to Infinity, Chastain turns back the clocks with an unmistakably ‘80s-sounding slice of instrumental metal (à la such guitarists as Tony MacAlpine’s and Greg Howe’s shred-heavy releases for Shrapnel Records). While Chastain lets his fingers fly “(“Attack of the Mechonrites,”" “Demonic Harmonic Justice Lullaby,” etc.), he also focuses on creating metallic grooves as well (“Hands of Time,” “Victim of the System,” etc.). If you’re looking for vintage-sounding shred metal, Countdown to Infinity will not disappoint. ~ Greg Prato, Rovi Performers: David T. Chastain – Guitar (Bass), Guitar, Bass; Mike Haid – Drums |

Countdown to Extinction $35.98 Megadeth guns for arena thrash success and gets it on Countdown to Extinction. Following the lead of 1991′s Metallica, Megadeth trades in their lengthy, progressive compositions for streamlined, tightly written and played songs more conducive to radio and MTV airplay. Cries of “sellout” seem pointless when the results are artistically (as well as commercially) successful; songs like the mega-hit “Symphony of Destruction,” “Skin O’ My Teeth,” “Foreclosure of a Dream,” and “Sweating Bullets” are among the band’s best. ~ Steve Huey, Rovi |

Countdown to Love $10.38 If jazz musicians can honor the past and be called “classicist” instead of “dated,” is there any reason why rock and R&B artists cannot do the same? Of course not. And Kenny Vance & the Planotones honor the past with consistently worthwhile results on Countdown to Love, a 49-minute CD that came out in 2007 but generally salutes ’50s doo wop. Countdown to Love is not the work of doo wop purists; a few of the tracks are more ’60s-sounding than ’50s-sounding. Vance offers a big dose of doo wop (including performances of the Drifters’ “There Goes My Baby” and Rosie & the Originals’ “Angel Baby”), but he also embraces the Burt Bacharach/Hal David favorite “Anyone Who Had a Heart” (which was a major hit for Dionne Warwick in 1963). The alliance of Bacharach/David and Warwick became profitable a few years after the heyday of doo wop, not before. Nonetheless, doo wop is the album’s primary focus — and besides, “Anyone Who Had a Heart” climbed the charts at a time when the ’60s still felt a lot like the ’50s. Historians equate the ’60s with social, political, and artistic upheaval, but it was during the late ’60s (as opposed to the early to mid-’60s) that the most dramatic upheaval came about in the United States and Canada as well as Great Britain. The Beatles, let’s not forget, started out performing Little Richard and Chuck Berry songs but ended up becoming major contributors to psychedelic rock, and Countdown to Love is an album that celebrates the pre-psychedelic days of rock and R&B. There is a lot to enjoy on Vance’s inspired homage to the ’50s and — to a lesser degree — the early to mid-’60s. ~ Alex Henderson, Rovi Performers: Bobby Jay – Bass (Vocal); Bobby Jay and the Hawks – Bass (Vocal); Brian ‘School Bus’ Posner – Handclapping; Eddie Hokenson – Vocals (Background); Kenny Vance – Vocals (Background); Andy Burton – Keyboards, Piano; James Campagnola – Saxophone; Jay Leslie – Saxophone; Johnny Gale – Vocals (Backgro |

Countdown Quartet $11.18 If you didn’t know any better, you might think this misnamed quintet was riding the Meters’ train straight out of the voodoo bayous of New Orleans, but instead they’re taking the Squirrel Nut Zippers’ express out of Raleigh. On hiatus from his main gig, Zippers frontman Jimbo Mathus lends his guitar, banjo, and vocal skills to this groove-oriented ensemble’s spirited debut. But if you come to this party expecting a Zippers-style swingfest, you’ll be sorely disappointed. Instead, you’ll get a classically funky, New Orleans-style jam band, with horns, organ, and percussion working their off-tempo grooves into a sweat-inducing frenzy. From raucous second-line rhythms and “Low Rider”-style grooves War would kill for to soulful laments and ferociously funky rave-ups, the Countdown Quartet clearly knows how to get the party started and keep it going, with some genuinely memorable tunes to back up their formidable instrumental chops. ~ Bret Love, Rovi Performers: Ted Zarras – Yells, Drums, Percussion |
