The Muppet Movie – Kermit’s 50th Anniversary Edition $9.98 Jim Henson vaulted Kermit, the famous floppy-armed frog, and his Muppet pals to the big screen with this charming 1979 musical adventure. Like the TV show that inspired it, Henson and director James Frawley playfully acknowledge movie clichés and conventions and allow the characters to address the camera in asides, like a Hope and Crosby road film for the 1980s. The ambitious singing frog decides… |

The List $14.38 After the dark and chilling themes of 2006′s Black Cadillac, which saw Rosanne Cash dealing with the deaths of her mother, Vivian Liberto, her father, Johnny Cash, and her stepmother, June Carter Cash — all of whom passed within a two-year span — one might assume that her next project would move into an even deeper level of bleakness, but with The List, it’s immediately clear that she has instead found a more measured place to stand, and it’s a lovely and redemptive outing that looks back to go forward. When Cash turned 18, her father, alarmed that his daughter only knew the songs that were getting played on the radio, gave her a list of what he considered 100 essential American songs; Cash kept that list, and now she’s drawn on it for this wonderfully nuanced outing that brims with a kind of redemptive timelessness. The List is a renewal and a testament to life, and it belongs to her father as much as it belongs to her, a beautiful restatement of her father’s passions, only now, they’ve become his daughter’s treasures, as well. It’s an affirming story, but that’s all it would be if Cash didn’t sing her heart out here. And she does sing her heart out. The opener, a version of Jimmie Rodgers’ “Miss the Mississippi and You,” is full of comfortable grace and sentiment, and Cash keeps that fine emotional tone throughout this set. Songs like the folk classic “500 Miles” feel at once both lovingly rendered and reborn for a new century in Cash’s hands, and she doesn’t update them so much as find redemption and solace in them, which in turn gives these songs a bright relevance, and because of the connection to her father and the list he gave to her, it also feels like a deep personal statement. There’s so much to take comfort in here, including her fine rendering of Bob Dylan’s “Girl from the North Country,” a nice turn at Harlan Howard’s “Heartaches by the Number” (which features Elvis Costello), a calm but still spooky duet with Jeff Tweedy on the faux-murder ballad “Long Black Veil,” and a duet with Bruce Springsteen on Hal David and Paul Hampton’s “Sea of Heartbreak.” Cash sings with a calm, measured authority, and all these the songs fit together with the same sort of refreshing resignation and care. Contemporary country radio probably won’t touch anything here, since country these days seems to be more about name-checking than any actual preservation, but Cash is after something else again — it’s about connecting with the past and carrying it forward as an act of personal faith. It has nothing to do with hats or belt buckles. ~ Steve Leggett, Rovi Performers: Curtis King – Vocals (Background); Kenny Williams – Vocals (Background); RIck DePofi – Horn, Clarinet (Bass), Piano; |

I’m Movin’ On [Country Stars] $10.39 Hank Snow was a truly original vocalist, an excellent guitarist and songwriter, and the single biggest country star to come out of Canada. If you’re looking for a affordable but substantial introduction to this Country Music Hall of Famer, A Proper Introduction to Hank Snow is more than adequate, although it is not a complete career retrospective. This attractively packaged bargain-price anthology is roughly equivalent to, but more hit-oriented than, ASV/Living Era’s The Singing Ranger from 2003. Covering the years 1949-1953, A Proper Introduction to Hank Snow is essentially a 28-track summary of Bear Family’s first Singing Ranger box set, boiling four discs’ worth of music down to a lengthy single-disc program of hits and rarities. The track list contains every chart hit Snow made during the period, including two duets with Anita Carter and his career hit, “I’m Movin’ On.” In fact, 18 of the 28 tracks were hits; the remainder are choice cuts and oddities such as “Boogie Woogie Flying Cloud” and the Christmas novelty “Reindeer Boogie.” Recordings fall into the public domain after 50 years in Europe, which is why this collection is so cheap, and also why Snow’s recordings from 1954 onward are not included. The Singing Brakeman [Country Stars] $10.38 He’s been called the Father of Country Music, and certainly a strong case could be made that Jimmie Rodgers was exactly that. He was, at the very least, the father of the commercial, star-driven world of modern country music, and if he was the most unlikely of stars, a star he was, landing songs like “Blue Yodel (T for Texas)” and “In the Jailhouse Now” regularly in the Top Ten of the U.S. record charts in the late 1920s and early ’30s. Both of those songs are here, but what makes this set even more interesting is the way it presents a rounded and varied portrait of the singer, featuring Rodgers working with Bob Sawyer’s Jazz Band (“My Blue Eyed Jane”), Lani McIntire’s Hawaiians (“For the Sake of Days Gone By”), the Louisville Jug Band (“My Good Gal’s Gone Blues”), Sara & Maybelle Carter (“The Wonderful City”) and Louis & Lillian Armstrong (“Blue Yodel No. 9 (Standin’ on the Corner)”). Mixing folk and blues with just enough autobiographical detail to make it something new — the template for modern country, as it turned out — Rodgers drew from several strains of American music to assemble his deceptively simple style, and that all those strains took him to the same river is easy to hear in this interesting collection. ~ Steve Leggett, Rovi Performers: Louis Armstrong – Trumpet; Mother Maybelle Carter – Guitar; Sara Carter – Vocals |

Set List $10.18 Set List is the first Frames’ release under the Irish roustabouts’ domestic distribution deal with Anti, in preparation for a proper studio full-length. It makes sense, the live album release — the Frames have always made their name on-stage, and Set List will disappoint neither the ardent fan nor curious newcomer. Glen Hansard is a frontman of the beaded, bloody sweat variety, and his mates never get tired of amping the emotion with heart tingling wails of guitar and shrill fiddle. The crowd never tires of it, either — they shout along with the righteous rock release of “Revelate,” hesitate in hushed anticipation for the nearly nine-minute novella “Santa Maria,” and coo like contented schoolchildren during the subtle rushes of “Lay Me Down.” Hansard proves to be a storyteller of the classic Irish variety, all unassuming humor and prescient asides. His lengthy intro to “What Happens When the Heart Just Stops” (from 2001′s For the Birds) is roundabout hilarious, and he lets it fade perfectly into some scattered opening chords before building the song to an absolutely elegiac moment of release. The rambling, deadpan folk-pop of “Rent Day Blues” offers a bit of a reprieve from this sort of soul-baring, but that’s only to set up a pair of screeching hymns in “Pavement Tune” and “The Stars Are Underground.” As the Frames are criminally underappreciated in the States, Set List can’t quite avoid the patches of second-generation staleness that almost always taint live albums. In other words, you had to be there. But it still substantiates the Frames’ reputation for punctuating passion with peels of feedback, making it recommended listening for the initiated and novice alike. ~ Johnny Loftus, Rovi |
