Woodstock: Three Days of Peace & Music (Two-Disc 40th Anniversary Director’s Cut) $7.75 The three-day Woodstock music festival in 1969 was the pivotal event of the 1960s peace movement, and this landmark concert film is the definitive record of that milestone of rock & roll history. City of Festivals $8.48 It is going to be interesting to watch the emo kids grow up in the years to come, to see what directions they head and what happens to all that youthful angst. Already Saves the Day and Hey Mercedes have made decent adult pop/rock albums with grown-up soul and intelligence. Decibully trumps them both with its debut record, City of Festivals. Decibully has ties to emo through the Promise Ring, post-rock through Pele, and noise pop through Camden. Despite this, they don’t really sound like they belong anywhere. Maybe they need their own style. How about post-emo chamber pop with some country overtones? They have a rich, fully orchestrated sound that is warm and cozy. It wraps around you like a blanket, William Seidel’s intimate vocals hovering nearby like an old friend. Every song is packed with instruments; vintage synths, harmonica, electric piano, lap steel, horns, banjo, cello, and all kinds of guitars are expertly woven into the mix. Vocal harmonies are also all over the record, culminating in “Uncle Sam’s Yard,” which features a large vocal choir and ends up sounding like a down-home Polyphonic Spree. To go along with the fantastic sound of the record, the group came up with a batch of songs to match. “On the Way to Your Hotel,” “Holy Angel Choir, ” “We Belong on Rooftops,” and the desolate and moving “Spiderbites” are songs that have power and emotional depth but don’t rock in any conventional sense. The music is literate and heartfelt, just like emo but without the cringe-inducing sappiness and over-emoting, and if a band on Domino or Too Pure or Matador had songs this strong it might be in the process of being hailed as the next big thing. Hopefully, emo-phobes will give a Polyvinyl release the chance it deserves, because City of Festivals is a really strong record. Between this record and the Saturday Looks Good to Me and Mates of State albums, Polyvinyl is on its way to becoming one of the best U.S. indie labels. ~ Tim Sendra, Rovi Performers: Aaron Vold – Choir, Chorus, Trombone, Drums, Percussion; Amber Johnson – Choir, Chorus; Chris Rosenau – Choir, Chorus; Corrie Minor – Vocal Harmony, Harmony Vocals; Eric Holliday – Choir, Chorus, Vocals (Background), Harmonica, Banjo, Guitar; Heidi Spencer – Vocal Harmony, Harmony Vocals, Choir, Chorus; Kristian Riley – Cello; Mike Holland – Choir, Chorus; |

Haflat Gharbia: The Western Concerts $14.42 It’s true that Syrian vocalist Omar Souleyman scored his first hit in Syria — Jani — in 1996, and in 2005 Khataba cemented his high-profile reputation for quality in the trans-Arab world (with some 600 live and studio albums via cassette released between the two). That said, it was the 2007 studio album Highway to Hassake on Sublime Frequencies that introduced Souleyman’s new wave of dabke music to Western and English-speaking audiences. Dabke is the folk form for wedding and dance party music from Syria; Souleyman updated the sound into something both timeless and furiously futuristic with the aid of multi-instrumentalist and keyboardist Rizan Sa’id and electric saz player Ali Shaker. Critical success followed that record all over the world, and it was followed in 2009 by Dabke 2020 and in 2010 by the excellent Jazeera Nights, also on Sublime Frequencies. However, the frenetic live sound of Souleyman was only available in the Middle East or in American cities with large Middle Eastern populations. Until now. Haflat Gharbia: The Western Concerts documents Souleyman and his band’s tours through Europe, Australia, and the United States between 2009 and 2011. Despite the greatness of the studio albums, an entire piece of the puzzle has been missing for residents of the West. Sa’id is able to make his wildly modified keyboards and samplers capture the sounds of the ney, violin, and numerous percussion instruments, while Shaker’s electric saz is as expertly played as any guitar virtuoso’s axe. Its amplified sound resembles a dead cross between a Fender Stratocaster and a sitar. In addition to these two, poet Zuhir Maksi literally stands close to Souleyman on-stage and whispers poetry or prose (both traditional and modern) into his ear. The singer transforms this in real time into a wailing live vocalization that is pure lightning-bolt energy, wailing with abandon atop the numerous rhythms, harmonies, and melodies being played with nonstop kinetic musical fire behind him. While there isn’t a weak cut on this nine-song, hourlong set, there are highlights, including “Haram [Forbidden -- I Signal, You Deny],” with its layered rhythms and call and response between keys and saz; the trancelike 11-minute stomper “Gazula/Shift Al Mani [I Saw Her]“; and the mournful — though no less quaking — “Wakhali [Empty].” Halfat Gharbia is among the finest live albums of the 21st century thus far and a side of Souleyman that his fans will crave in the future. ~ Thom Jurek, Rovi |

Amsterdam Live Concerts 1953 $38.38 There’s no shortage of live and studio recordings from Big Bill Broonzy’s European appearances during the ’50s — if not as common as Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee live sets, they are out there. That said, this two-CD set is still a dazzling addition to Broonzy’s discography, on technical as well as musical grounds. It not only captures him on two excellent nights of performance, but also — thanks to the technical expertise of Louis Van Gasteren, the sound engineer (and later a movie producer) who made the tapes — in amazing fidelity, equal to the best work of any record label. Broonzy had led the way to Europe for a generation of elder statesmen of the blues, and his performances were so powerful and so commanding — and well received — that for 15 years after he first went over, American bluesmen were able to follow his path across the Atlantic, to bigger, more enthusiastic audiences and better paying gigs than they’d ever known in their native United States. In what had to be his first taste of respect as a musician from a white audience, by most accounts Broonzy seemed to revel in the reception that he got, and the relatively free and open societies (compared with what existed in the United States at the time) that he encountered in Europe. He never lived long enough to play in any of the big folk festivals of the early ’60s, so what we have to go on comes from these European performances. Amsterdam Live Concerts 1953 was recorded across two nights and includes over 110 minutes of performing; Broonzy’s playing as well as his singing takes on profound dimensions. His highly animated guitar part on “John Henry” is similar here to what he uses on the same song from his 1952 London appearance, as released by the Jasmine label, as well as elsewhere — but it is recorded much more closely on this set, so that you can actually hear the action on the strings; he also excels as a singer on these sets, and there are moments that go beyond the singing; when Broonzy introduces “Back-Water Blues” with talk of a flood in which stranded survivors starved to death, it not only is a topical reference to then-recent events in Holland, but also resonates across 52 years to events in New Orleans. The vocal pyrotechnics that he uses on that and other numbers, coupled with the virtuoso guitar work throughout, make this essential listening for any blues enthusiast, even more so than Broonzy’s ’50s sides for Verve Records, because he is more impressive working in front of an audience. As the liner notes reveal, Broonzy had a special relationship with his Dutch audience, and his involvements in Amsterdam would become even more personal later in the decade, so perhaps it is fitting that this body of recordings — done entirely with the artist’s approval at the time — should emerge from those performances. The price is steep, and it’s taken a long time for all of it to emerge, but the material is unique in quality and content and has been packaged with the kind of |

The Last Concerts: 1972 & 1975 $16.78 2009 two CD set containing two shows from the Jazz great. The Phoenix Concerts Live $19.66 John Stewart’ Phoenix Concerts is regarded as one of the classic live records of the folk singer/songwriter genre, and it’s easy to see why. It’s obvious that Stewart has an adoring audience at the peak of his popularity in 1974. Taken from a few concert sessions, the bands range from the artist in a trio setting to being in a full on septet with pedal steel guitar and backing vocalists. Besides Stewart himself, the only notable performer on the sets is legendary drummer Jim Gordon. Many of Stewart’s classics are here, including a very inspired “Wheatfield Lady” and “Kansas Rain.” The music hearkens back to a much more innocent time that many at this concert no doubt longed for — as did the artist himself perhaps after 1968, when his dreams were shattered with the death of Robert Kennedy (Stewart toured with Kennedy on the campaign trail). Other gems here are “California Bloodlines,” “Mother Country,” “The Last Campaign Trilogy,” which is so moving it’s almost unbearable. With “Roll Way the Stone,” “July, You’re a Woman,” and “Cody,” Stewart hits his stride and goes over the top, and the gigs shift into a whole different gear. His stories are endearing and predate what Garrison Keillor did by a decade. The set officially closes with a stunning rendition of “Never Goin’ Back (To Nashville Anymore),” that makes you forget the studio version and wonder why it wasn’t covered by Townes Van Zandt or Mickey Newbury. That said, there are two bonus tracks on the CD from the same shows, “Freeway Pleasure” and “Let the Big Horse Run,” that make this an essential set for anyone interested in Stewart or the roots of the singer/songwriter movement in America that is populated by many of this artist’s pupils, Jerry Jeff Walker, Guy Clark, and Tom Russell among them. ~ Thom Jurek, Rovi Performers: Buffy Ford – Voices; Dan Dugmore – Pedal Steel, Guitar (Electric); Denny Brooks – Voices; Mike Settle – Voices; Arnie Moore – Bass; Jim Gordon – Drums; John Stewart – Guitar (Acoustic), Vocals, Guitar (Electric), Guitar; Jonathan Douglas – Conga, Piano, Organ; Loren Newkirk – Piano, Organ |

Country Music $14.38 Naturally, the not-so-unspoken joke behind the title of Willie Nelson’s 2010 album is that it’s been so long since he’s played straight country music, he needs to clearly label it when he does. Of course, that’s not strictly true: just as recently as 2009 he was ripping it up with Asleep at the Wheel, turning out a straight-ahead western swing record that is every bit as country as Country Music, although it is true that he’s never quite cut a collection of country music as hushed and muted as this. The soft-plucked string bass and strummed acoustic guitars are trademarks of T-Bone Burnett, the roots music producer whose well-tailored analog impressionism fetishizes authenticity, prizing every piece of pristinely preserved vintage equipment and then recording them immaculately, often with appealing results. There’s a nicely weathered assurance to Nelson’s performance — his voice never strains, he throws off licks with a casual virtuosity — and he sounds like an old pro happy to play with whoever is in the studio, happy to sing whatever the producer puts in front of him. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, Rovi Performers: Jim Lauderdale – Vocal Harmony; Dennis Crouch – Bass (Acoustic); Mickey Raphael – Harmonica; Mike Compton – Mandolin; Riley Baugus – Banjo; Ronnie McCoury – Mandolin; Russell Pahl – Pedal Steel; Shad Cobb – Fiddle; Stuart Duncan – Fiddle; Budd |
